Garry Winogrand was a prominent street photographer, born 14 January 1928 and died 19 March 1984. He was also a painter and wrote many books as well. I believe he described photography perfectly when he said "A photograph is the illusion of a literal description of how the camera 'saw' a piece of time and space." His work has been quite influential on me, even though I am prominently a macro photographer, the street photography I do take is very much Winogrand inclined. He primarily shot black and white photography which, in what he was trying to capture and make his audience perceive the shot therein, I feel gave it more character. One quote of his that I find myself living by daily without even thinking about it is "All things are photographable." Especially in my macro style of photography, I have found there is a way to photograph virtually everything and make it beautiful. Sometimes you'll find beauty in the most unusual places, you would have never thought of if it were not for a chance being taken.
Please check out his work. It's defiantly worth taking the time to look at.
